Cultural Sensitivity for Educators

DURATION: 4 HOURS

We use a competency-based framework to define the skills, behaviors, knowledge and attitudes of people who meet the challenge of culturally diverse school environments. It is a 4-plus-1 model. Four features of the framework are ideal behaviors and traits of an individual working in a professional context.

The additional competency is unique to the personality, community context and role of the attendee. It is a skill, behavior, or attitude that would help individuals to be a part of or create a community that works effectively to achieve student well-being and success. As attendees work through the course material, they will be asked to reflect on how they would name the “plus one” competency (skill, behavior, knowledge, or attitude).

The workshop will give attendees some practical tools and techniques that will improve their ability to engage in culturally responsive communication that:

  • supports student well-being and excellence;
  • discerns the boundaries (property line) of others;
  • avoids the rush to judgement.

MODULE 1 – DEVELOPING A CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE PERSONA

Key message – A thoughtful and respectful practice begins with an understanding of unconscious bias.

Learning goals

  • I can describe how unconscious bias (simple stories) prevents me from valuing the lived experience of my students and peers;
  • I can use the lens (concept) of simple stories to mitigate the influence of bias that hinders culturally responsive conduct;
  • I can describe the skills, behavior, and attitude that supports respectful communication when talking about or working with individuals from different backgrounds and life experiences.

MODULE 2 – MANAGING BOUNDARIES: MITIGATING THE IMPACT OF CULTURAL BIAS

Key message – You can mitigate the impact of unconscious bias by associating positive images and words with individuals outside your comfort zone.

Learning goals

  • I can describe how the legal, personal, and professional boundaries support social and emotionally intelligent service to the public;
  • I can use the lens (concept) of simple stories, values, and the open and honest communication model to build authentic connections with people outside my comfort zone.
